Your Child's First Dental Visit: A 2026 Parent's Guide

When should your child first see a dentist? What happens at the visit? How to make it stress-free — answered by a paediatric dentist.

The Indian Dental Association now recommends a child's first dental visit by age 1, or within 6 months of the first tooth appearing. Most parents bring their kids at 4–5 years — by which point cavities are often already established.

Why Age 1?

Early visits aren't really about treatment — they're about preventing problems and building positive associations. We check bite development, screen for risk factors, and counsel parents on cleaning, feeding, and night-bottle habits.

What Happens at the Visit

Knee-to-knee exam (parent and dentist face each other, child lies across both laps), gentle tooth count, fluoride varnish application, and lots of stickers. Total time: 15 minutes. No drills. No needles.

Making it Fun (Not Traumatic)

Never use the dentist as a threat ('if you don't brush, the dentist will pull your teeth'). Read children's books about dental visits. Schedule morning appointments when kids are fresh. Bring a comfort toy.

Our Kid-Friendly Setup

Cusp Dental has a dedicated paediatric corner with cartoons on ceiling-mounted screens, kid-sized chairs, and dentists trained in behaviour management. First visits for under-5s are free.
